What are the Virginia continuing education requirements for real estate professionals?
Brokers must complete 24 hours of continuing dducation to renew their licenses. Of these 24 hours, renewing brokers must take:
- 8 hours in Broker Management & Agent Supervision
- 3 hours in Ethics & Standards of Conduct
- 2 hours in Fair Housing
- 1 hour in Legal Updates and Emerging Trends [including flood instruction]
- 1 hour in Real Estate Agency
- 1 hour in Real Estate Contracts.
Experienced Salespersons must complete 16 hours of continuing education to renew their licenses. Of these 16 hours, renewing experienced salespersons must take:
- 3 hours in Ethics & Standards of Conduct
- 2 hours in Fair Housing
- 1 hour in Legal Updates and Emerging Trends [including flood instruction]
- 1 hour in Real Estate Agency
- 1 hour in Real Estate Contracts.
How Do I Renew My Virginia Real Estate License?
- Complete the appropriate amount of continuing education

- Pay the appropriate renewal fee through the Online Services site

My Virginia real estate license is inactive. Do I still need to renew?
Yes, licenses must be renewed by your expiration date, however, no continuing education is required to renew an inactive license.
I did not receive a renewal card. How do I renew my Virginia real estate license?
No sooner than 60 days before your license expiration, send the renewal fee with checks payable to Treasurer of Virginia. Include your registration number on the check and mail it to:

Does Virginia Have Reciprocity With Any Other State?
The Board will accept up to 8 hours of approved continuing education courses that a broker or experienced salesperson completed in another state, as long as the licensee holds a current real estate license in that other state and completed these continuing education courses during the current two-year license term. These 8 out-of-state hours can be applied only to the "Real Estate Related Subjects" (elective) Continuing Education category.
